House Painting as a Business Opportunity

House Painting is an excellent source of potential income. A house painting business can be started with a minimum amount of capital and can generate a six figure income with year around employment. One\'s income is dependent upon the region of the country and the type of painting service performed. But most importantly, this business offers a potential for Great Profitability if the owner employs the correct business plan.

First, I have to admit that although I\'ve been painting for over 3 decades, I do not paint because I love it. I paint houses because it is so profitable! When I started out there was no Home Depot or Lowes. You had to purchase paint and equipment from the local paint store. Generally speaking, house painting was a respected trade and good painters were always in demand. Today, many feel due to the spread of home improvement stores and the abundance of home improvement information available on TV that anyone can paint their own house today. So who needs a painter?

Well, I\'ve got a secret for you. Actually a very rewarding secret.

Although great products are generally more available then ever before, there is a huge chunk of our population who fall into one of several categories. They might hesitate to paint their own homes having no personal skill or experience. They might have painted before and were not happy with their results. Then again, they might simply be too busy or simply hate to paint! Regardless of the reasons, keeping busy as a house painter is not difficult at all if you know how to advertise.

The challenge to the new painting business is being profitable, not keeping busy. If you aren\'t careful, you can find yourself working harder then ever and not doing much for your bottom line. In fact, it isn\'t unusual at all to meet painters who are great workers but are always complaining about "never making any money."

I recently spoke to a painter with over 20 years experience. He was advertising his winter \'off-season\' rates in an attempt to generate business. So I asked him if his expenses were less in the \'off-season\' then during the summer? You know the answer to that question.

The point is this: with the correct house painting business plan and execution, a small business owner should never have to lower his prices to generate business. Yet it\'s safe to say that the overwhelming majority of house painters do lower their prices during one part of the year or another. Guaranteed anyone reading this and having worked in the trade of house painting for any length of time knows exactly what I\'m talking about. Then again, the statistics prove that 95% of small businesses fail in the first year. Do you think the owners "Planned" to fail? Hardly, it\'s more likely they simply "failed to plan" their business.

So in case you are wondering, Yes there is excellent business opportunity in the field of house painting. But be sure to plan your business setup and operation to be profitable from the start!

This Old Thing: Calgary artist’s painting valued at $2,500

Q. I have a Roland Gissing oil painting purchased by my grandfather in Calgary, long ago. The canvas is approximately 38 centimetres high by 51 cm wide (15 by 20 inches). We think it’s a painting of the Three Sisters Peaks in Banff, painted in 1937. Have you any ideas about caring for this painting? Also what do you suppose it is worth?

Don't Let Your Plein-Air Skills Grow Cold

Don't give up your plein air focus over the winter months. Try to paint from life indoors and keep sketching. ( Melting Snow by Ben Fenske, 60 x 75, oil on canvas.) For some of us, winter weather is just a bit too unpredictable and chilly to spend much time outdoor painting. But if you're like me, you don't want to go for several months without making art. So this is the time of the year when I ...
