If you walk down the aisles of any home improvement paint section you’ll see familiar models of airless paint sprayers. Due to some great marketing, the Wagner paint sprayer is becoming more and more popular with regular home owners. In the past, only professionals would think about buying a paint sprayer but that is no longer the case. With family time at a premium in many families, there are more people then ever before considering the use of paint sprayers to speed up the job of home maintenance.
The paint companies have exploded their color selections with colors that appeal to almost everyone. Mom would like a fresh new look throughout the house but Dad isn’t looking forward to spending his valuable time doing the job. So the natural question arises: “Do these airless paint sprayers really work?”
Through the years I’ve used just about every type of paint sprayer imaginable but I tend to agree with consumer reviews on the subject. If you read the reviews, you’ll find most people are dissatisfied with the small hand held units. These are the least expensive sprayers but also the least effective for painting any larger area then a single lawn chair. Typical problems are repeated refilling the small cup and excessive vibration as well as lack of spray control. They just don’t seem to stand up to repeated use regardless of how well they are maintained.
A few years ago, Wagner introduced their “Paint Crew” series of sprayers. These are a good step up from the hand held units and do a decent job. These range around the $200-$300 mark and offer the benefits of a professional style paint sprayer gun. Their top of the line model has a .5 HP motor with adjustable spray pressure. But to get the benefits mentioned you have to shell out near $300. Although reviews are favorable for first use it seems many negatives arise when you examine reviews of those using for 20 gallons or more. In other words, in my opinion the pumps or components don’t hold up to extended use.
Until recently you had to go to paint stores or specialty shops to find professional grade airless paint sprayers but that is no longer the case. Due to increased competition and popularity you can now find commercial style twin stroke piston pump sprayers at reasonable prices. My reasoning is: “why spend $300 for something that has a short life when I can buy a commercial grade Wagner paint sprayer for about $350. Wagner makes several models but the Wagner 9145 Paint Sprayer is perfect for the home owner, maintenance worker or part-time painting contractor that wants a versitile machine which will last for years. This machine is made to take the bumps presented by real world use and has all the capabilities you’d expect from a commercial machine.
If you find yourself painting additional properties as a landlord or a regular part-time painter you might consider the Wagner 9155 Paint Sprayer or even the Wagner 9170. These two machines are more portable which is great for larger outside jobs and have more power for regular commercial use.
My top selection for a home owner would be the Wagner 9145 paint sprayer though. It offers commercial grade construction, its easily carried being built on a skid platform and has ample power to spray just about anything a home owner would desire. It also isn’t that much more expensive then the “wanna-be” units that are so familiar. These higher end machines are an investment that will last for years and provide top performance with proper care. Another benefit is these machines will allow use of some very handy accessories like my favorite the power roller. This enables one to use the machine on interior work even the home is full of furniture with no worry of over spray. So go ahead and look at the Wagner paint sprayer that is right for you the next time a paint job arises.
